Friday the 13th, January of 2006
Friday the 13th, January of 2006 IT IS ALMOST OVER Please do this TODAY. Recommend JibberJobber to the Department of Labor. Read why here, or Recommend here. THANK YOU! This was the last day at the job I got let go from, four years ago. On the way home I was a blender of emotions. Elated to be free of the crap. Sad to feel betrayed. Useless since I was a tool. Many, many emotions. But heck, look at me know. Im still ALIVE. And Im doing better than ever. Im happier. Im more powerful (because Im EMPOWERED). Im positioned to really tackle MY goals, not some other guys goals. Im OKAY. And if your last day is today (or yesterday, or yesteryear, or next month), Ill tell you, YOU WILL BE OKAY. YOU WILL BE OKAY. It might take four months. It make take two years. But YOU WILL BE OKAY! Friday the 13th, January of 2006 IT IS ALMOST OVER Please do this TODAY. How to Help Graduates Develop a Professional Mindset
How to Help Graduates Develop a Professional Mindset There is a discord between what employers are looking for and what grads have on offer. In a Hay Group study of 450 business leaders and 450 recent graduates based in India, the US, and China, a massive 76% of business leaders reported that entry-level workers and recent grads are not ready for their jobs. Having endured years of university studies, these graduates are intelligent, passionate, ambitious and know their way around technology. So why arent employers happy with their skills? Turns out business leaders are looking for soft skills such as empathy, resilience, collaboration, self-discipline and clear communication. Most graduates believe that soft skills get in the way of doing their jobs well and that their tech skills are more valuable than their soft skills. Leaders, on the other hand believe that soft skills help you advance faster, tech skills are a necessity but soft skills really make you shine and deliver a better commercial impact. Solutions: Promote self-regulation; acceptance of uncertainty and change Teach time-management; introduce specific time management methods Create a mentor program; help graduates get a big picture perspective Learn more in the infographic below by Daniel Goleman: Featured image: Shutterstock

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese This is What You Have to Do to Be Invaluable
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese This is What You Have to Do to Be Invaluable We often over-estimate our worth at work. Just look at the number of people who lose their jobs because of layoffs or downsizings or mergers, and you'll find a lot of them thought there was no way they would be let go. Maybe Slacker Suzy or Psycho Phil would be let go, but not them. Then they find themselves out of work. One of the keys to avoiding such a fate is to make sure that you're valuable to the boss and the company -- and never letting them forget it. But such a strategy means more than just showing up for work on time and doing your job. The real way to show others that you're critical to the company's success is to: Show you understand it's about the bottom line. Before you submit a proposal or an innovative idea, show that the time and the money will be worth it. Use data or other information to show how it helps theorganization, such as improving the customer experience. Look for ways to boost efficiency.Maybe you cant figure out a way to generate extra money, but companies are always looking for ways to cut expenses. For example, with a little research you may discover ways to cut down on the air-conditioning bill. Serving as quality control. While you want to make sure youre doing work that is as error-free as possible, you can become a critical employee if youre able to stop ineffective or defective work by others. If you view even one mistake as critical to the companys bottom line, management will begin to depend on you more and more. Hang on to customers.Even though you don't work with customers all the time, you come across one that is unhappy. Rather than passing her onto someone else, you find a way to give her a partial refund, which satisfies her and saves the company a full refund. Know what you cost. Experienced workers are more expensive. They not only earn more, but they often have accrued more vacation time or have higher healthcare costs. Your position can become more precarious when you take more from the bottom line, which is why its important to make sure youre finding ways to pay for your position by either generating more business or finding cost savings. Document it.Make sure you get credit for your contributions by sending e-mails or making reports that show when you made the suggestion. This not only helps your current job, but can be key proof for future employers that you can deliver what you promise on your abilities.

New Tool For Benchmarking Salary
New Tool For Benchmarking Salary Indeed recently added a feature that allows job seekers to enter a minimum salary requirement in the keyword search box. This feature will allow users to only receive information on jobs estimated to have similar salaries. Besides the obvious benefits of improving job targeting by creating search parameters around salary requirements, I see additional value in this feature including:a vehicle for validating if your salary requirements are realistic.a tool for career changers who are trying to understand their potential market value in a new industry/job function.a benchmark that can help drive the salary negotiation conversation.an indicator of how your current salary stacks up to similar positions.Information is certainly power when it comes to negotiating your salary. Any conversations around salary expectations should focus on what the market will bear rather than what you want. Indeeds tool can be leveraged to help build the credibility of your negotiation strategy and secure mo re of what you want. By showing yourself as an educated consumer who understands your market value, you are more likely to achieve your salary goals without compromising the relationship you have worked so hard to build with a hiring manager. In addition to doing online research, do off-line research by asking recruiters and colleagues about salaries for the types of positions you are exploring and benchmark these findings against your online data.

Summer Networking Tips to Remember
Summer Networking Tips to Remember Who you know is as important as what you know. Which is why I took my own advice and sponsored some summer networking events in Boston and New York this past month. (Proceeds benefited two great causes.) Perhaps some of you reading this attended or saw the events posted on my site or on Eventbrite. It was fun to reconnect with past clients and colleagues as well as friends and even family members.Maybe its been a while since you focused on expanding your network. Its not too late. Summer isnt over. If youve been feeling stuck in your career or want a positive group of supportive people, maybe its time to do some summer networking. Here are important tips to remember…Prepare by Defining Your Perfect Network: I take clients through a process Soul Search, Research, and Job Search. I support them in understanding who they are and what they most want from their careers. This helps them identify whom they most want to network with. And with sites liked LinkedIn and Tw itter, it’s easier now more than ever to connect with the right people. Recently a client was put in touch with a heavy hitter in financial services. Because she had done her Soul Search, she was able to articulate to this person, the type of role and the type of company she wanted to work with. It’s led to productive networking conversations that she otherwise might have been able to cultivate.Navigate and Build Solid Relationships: Be someone people want to associate with. Take a genuine interest in others. Ask questions about who they are and what they are looking to do. Be of service and give help before you need it. I was contacted by someone who wanted to do career coaching. Unfortunately every time we talked the person was only intent on “picking my brain†and didn’t offer any type of help or support in return. Needless to say, I cut ties with that person after just a few conversations when I realized how one sided the relationship would be. Don’ t be that someone who always asks for favors or help for themselves. Be that someone who provides proactive support.Get the Most Out of Networking by Being Memorable: I often find people leave out important details of their stories. They downplay successes and dont share the heartfelt reason(s) behind their career aspirations. Before your next networking event, ask yourself these questions? What do really want to do? ? What life experience led you to want to do this? ? What help do you need to get there?Ive coached many people to create and share this kind of elevator pitch with the personal touch. Why? Ive realized that when networking, its the personal details that stick. If you want to be remembered, youve got to let people in on not just what you want to do but why doing that is important to you. Read my elevator pitch with the personal touch.Stay tuned for more networking events happening in New York this October and check out my mastermind ser ies starting in September. Together, we can help each other make a great living!
